THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK
Whit his penetrating look he studied the human race, looking for some humanity....something that made him not
James Dean, the man behind the mask. From all that has been written or said about him, and still is, behind the mask
depressive. James didn’t put his head in sand....and although he tried to understand the world, he couldn’t
accept this “real” world, that was almost the same as the fake-world of Hollywood. In his eyes there had to be
an honest and fair world. So he created his own world, where he could be himself. Sometimes he left the house
to touch the “real” world. He went to the house of a friend and was standing there for over an hour...shall I
or shall I not....and then to decide to go back to his own world. Sometimes he was different, he was open and
happy and was standing with both legs in this world.
If his friends couldn’t accept the way he was, than the friendship was over. After all, he had done it all alone
and didn’t owe something to someone. And he didn’t hide that.
Despite getting more finances, he lived sober and didn’t need much. He didn’t buy new clothes, always wearing
the old jacket and black coat he bought two years ago. And when somebody asked why, he said: ”Why buying a new
one, when this one is still in good shape?”
He seldom went to town, spending all his time at studying, getting as much knowledge as he could. To relax, he
went to friends, who accepted him as he was….unconditional.
he was just an ordinary boy. Searching for his way....like we all do.
